14 Darlington reactor contracts go to Toronto-area firms

The provincial government said 14 contracts have been awarded to companies in the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area (GTHA) to build the G7’s first small modular reactor (SMR) at the Darlington New Nuclear Project. The province says the work will create jobs in the region and add over $110 million to Ontario’s GDP.

The contracts cover components such as transformers, pumps and specialized steel. Scarborough’s Armstrong Fluid Technology, for example, received $3.9 million for a pumphouse enclosure and pumps. The province also says it worked with Ontario Power Generation (OPG), which has signed agreements with more than 100 Canadian companies, so that 80% of project spending goes to Ontario companies.

Once all four units are built, the SMRs at Darlington will deliver 1,200 megawatts (MW), which the province says can power about 1.2 million homes. The province also estimates the project will sustain about 3,800 skilled jobs for 65 years.
