CPP Investments puts US$50 million into Beacon Software

BetaKit reported that CPP Investments (CPPIB) announced an investment of US$50 million (C$69 million) in Beacon Software, a Toronto holding company that buys software firms and adds AI. The equity stake, from CPPIB’s Growth Equity Unit, buys a place in a rollup: buying many companies in one field and running them as a group. That strategy is sometimes compared with Constellation Software, a Canadian software firm. Beacon’s portfolio has 45 companies, mainly in logistics, education, finance, manufacturing and utilities.

The new money will go toward more acquisitions and hiring “frontier AI engineers” to build Beacon’s shared AI operating system. It is part of an expanded Series C, a later round of funding in which investors buy shares in a young company. The original round, in June, raised US$225 million, led by General Catalyst, a Silicon Valley-based investor, and Boston’s HarbourVest Partners, with Toronto’s Intrepid Growth Partners. With CPPIB’s stake, the round now totals US$425 million.
