Ontario pauses some Better Jobs Ontario training funding

BNN Bloomberg reported that Ontario has paused at least some funding for Better Jobs Ontario, a program that pays for skills training for unemployed people. The program aims to move people off social assistance and into the workforce. The government has not publicly communicated the program’s status.

Career Colleges Ontario, an association of career colleges, said member schools reported a pause and it has had no formal word. Separately, Colleges and Universities Minister Nolan Quinn announced earlier this month that OSAP, Ontario’s student aid, is paused for students at all private post-secondary institutions. The pause followed preliminary audit findings that raised serious concerns about financial aid use at some career colleges.

Job seeker Reece Daniel hoped to start a heating, ventilation and air conditioning course in London, Ont., on October 19; the next intake is in May 2027.

The scale of the pause, and how long it will last, are not yet known.
